The Acting Gallery Educator plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates education and public programming activities for the Mann Art Gallery, under supervision of the Director/Curator in the following areas:

Program:

1.      Shall develop, schedule, and conduct in-house school curriculum-based tours. Recognized educational methodology and practices should be followed. Efforts should be made to accommodate the school’s special needs.

2.      Educational based programs for arts and cultural related streams in the forms of seminars, workshops, classes, lectures, films, demonstrations, etc. These programs should be balanced to accommodate all age groups and abilities, including elderly individuals and those with intellectual disabilities.

3.      Conduct interpretive tours related to the exhibits for all age groups and abilities.

4.      Coordinate, advertise, and hang student exhibitions including an annual High School Juried Art Show.

5.      Plan and administrate summer day camp program.

6.      Supervise summer education assistants (student positions).

7.      Provide budgetary requirements for the gallery education budget and educational grants (community grants, others). Works within the budget and upon approval by the Director/Curator.

8.      Shall follow all purchasing and related policies as established by the Mann Art Gallery.

Public Relations

1.      Act as a liaison between school boards, educational facilities, and the Mann Art Gallery.

2.      Develop and maintain appropriate contacts with peer professional groups.

3.      Provide regular feedback to the Director/Curator regarding education programs and community needs.

4.      Interact with gallery visitors.

Facility:

1.      Maintain stock and educational supplies

2.      Assist in general upkeep of the facility, in particular, the classroom as follows:

Cleans classroom tables
Monthly, scrubs classroom tables
Keeps the sinks clean of artistic materials
Keeps the artistic component of the supply cupboard clean and organized.

3.      Assist Director/Curator and any other MAG staff with a variety of other tasks including installation and striking of exhibition, painting, cleaning, special events, fundraisers, and other related duties.

General Duties:

Administrative/Auxiliary Duties:

1.      Answer phones, take messages and ensure that communications are forwarded to the appropriate staff members.

2.      Attend and assist in set-up/take-down of receptions/special events as required by the Director/Curator.

3.      Organize and arrange for volunteers as needed.

4.      Assist in organizing fundraising events as needed in consultation with the Director/Curator.

5.      Assist in organizing public programming events as needed (including WFJAS, etc) in consultation with the Director/Curator.

6.      Various administrative duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:

1.      Maintain thorough knowledge of current practices in the care and conservation of art works.

2.      Demonstrated ability to supervise staff.

3.      Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.

4.      Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, artists, artwork lenders and donors and professionals in the museum community.

5.      Ability to maintain close attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy and to detect errors quickly.

6.      Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

7.      Demonstrated organizational skill.

8.      Demonstrated skill in the development and operation of relational databases, including the creation and design of customized reports.

Hours and Wage:

·       Hourly wage position beginning on January 1st, 2019 (or earlier if possible). This position runs until June 2020.

·       $19.00/hour. 

·       35 hours per week:

o   Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM with a one-hour unpaid lunch break.

o   Specific hours are dictated by program needs; evening and weekend work will occasionally be required.

o   Banked overtime system in place as per Human Resource Manual.

·       Option to enroll in Health Benefits plan
 

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree with Major in Visual Arts (or similar) OR Bachelor of Education, with emphasis on visual art or gallery education, or equivalent.
  • Experience working with children, youth, adults, elderly individuals, and those with intellectual disabilities.
  • Gallery education experience preferred.
  • Demonstrates interest and involvement in the arts generally, plus a desire to provide all ages with an opportunity to appreciate the visual arts.
  • Successful experience with grant applications.
  • Strength and mobility to perform required physical duties and ability to work on a ladder.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Organizational skills.
